Old Faces, Same Places: Phillip Fulmer named AD at the University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee has decided to go back to a familiar face to become their new AD, after the hiring of former head football coach Phillip Fulmer. Fulmer will be introduced some time today in Knoxville, after being hired this past Summer as an “Advisor to the community,” whatever that means. He was given the job a day after the Volunteers fired John Currie, who was just hired 8 months ago.

There are numerous reports out about how Fulmer has been behind the scenes lobbying and for this job and trying to sabbotage Currie during his search for a new coach, since Butch Jones was recently fired. I’m not too sure about all of that, but I do know that having a stronger personality in Rocky Top, will definitely help sooth whomever decides to accept the head coaching job in Knoxville, because lord knows it’s been an absolute mess since the firing of Phillip Fulmer in 2008.

Jimbo Fisher leaves Florida State for Texas A&M

You can now add Florida State to the list of schools looking for a new head coach, after Jimbo Fisher resigned today to accept the head coaching job with Texas A&M. The deal is reportedly worth 10 years & $75M($7.5M/year). That’s a hefty price tag for a head coach and it means that the Aggies are in this thing for the long haul with Jimbo, who flirted with the SEC last season when it was rumored LSU was on his radar. Jimbo leaves behind a Florida State program that won a National Championship just 3 seasons ago and are now left with nothing but question marks.

Eli out, Geno in

Tags

The Giants announced today that for the first time since his rookie season, Eli Manning will not be the starting quarterback for the G-Men. It’s been a disappointing season all around for the NFC East and this is no exception. Geno Smith will get the start after Eli Manning reportedly declined to start…I’m sure there will be more to come out about this situation in the hours/days to come.

Auburn beats Bama in the Iron Bowl 26-14

The 2017 Iron Bowl goes to the Auburn Tigers, as they defended home field and now has shaken up the college football world just a little bit more. So, now we are looking at a situation, where the committee could be deciding if a 2-loss Ohio State team could actually make the playoff. Look, Alabama is a great program but the Tide haven’t really played anybody worth mentioning this season, and since they’re not going to be competing for the SEC Championship next weekend, they should not be in considered for the playoff unless Auburn wins the SEC. I know what that sounds like but we just saw it happen last season with Ohio State. This Auburn team came out playing fast from the opening kick and they’re defense limited the big runs and big plays that Bama normally comes up with. We shall how the committee reacts.

Chip Kelly hired at UCLA

The UCLA Bruins have made it official, they will be hiring former Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly as their new signal-caller. Kelly has been out of college football for a while now, so it will be cool to see his offense in the Pac 12 again. Say what you want about Kelly as a NFL coach, but in college, his ish works. This is going to be an interesting thing to see in the next couple of years, as I am sure recruiting for the Bruins is about to pickup!

Pitt plays spoiler for Canes

The Miami Hurricanes just lost their first game of the season and it was at the hands of Pitt…that’s right the 4-7 Pittsburgh Panthers beat the undefeated Miami Hurricanes 24-14 at Heinz Field this afternoon.  For Canes fans, this game looked all too familiar to the game from last week when  Miami’s defense allowed UVA’s QB to get hot early on and the defense had to bail them out, as usual. Look as a Miami fan, I ain’t gone sugarcoat it, our offense is piss poor and it starts with Rozier. I know he’s going through some personal things right now, but he has been too inconsistent throughout the season and his backup looks shaky every time I’ve seen him play. The Canes have the ACC Championship game next week against Clemson, and this weekend could see more upsets in the top 6, so they aren’t completely out of the playoffs yet, but they most definitely will have to win next week or its off to the Citrus Bowl or Chick Fil A Bowl BS!

Patrick Beverly out for season

The LA Clippers took another L today, as it was announced that Patrick Beverly is out for the season after undergoing microfracture  knee surgery. Beverly was suppose to serve as the starting PG in place of Chris Paul, but after shutting down Lonzo Ball in game 1 of the season(which doesn’t really seem like much today) he has been hampered with injuries and will have to shut it down for the remainder of the season. Doc Rivers may as well start looking to sell his home and look for analyst positions with the major networks, because it’s OV for him in the City of Angels.

Chiefs sign Darrelle Revis

The Kansas City Chiefs have added the services of veteran DB Darrelle Revis. The 7 time pro bowler has familiarity with the current defense and brings plenty of experience to a defense that needs an extra body in the defensive backfield. He hasn’t played since last season with the Jets and we all know how that ended for him. I thought he would’ve signed with someone by now, but I think this was more of a strategic move by Revis than a team not wanting him, per se. So, let us see how this works out for the Chiefs and Revis Peninsula, I mean island.

TSSAA Football Quartefinals: Haywood vs Crockett Co., Pearl Cohn vs Fairview, Covington vs Raleigh-Egypt plus more!

It’s playoff football time here in Tennessee and the Quarterfinals kickoff tonight @ 7pm. We’d like to take a moment to highlight a few games from across the state. Let us start in Division I Class AAA with the Firebirds of Pearl Cohn out of Nashville, TN. They will be up against Fairview tonight, and the Firebirds ended the regular season with a record of 8-2 and they have won their last 3 games 146-0…just let that sink in for a minute, 146-0! Pearl Cohn’s opponent for tonight has a record of 9-3 but they are going to need their “big boy pants” on tonight, because Pearl Cohn has been on an absolute tear lately.

Now the other game to watch tonight is going to be the 12-0 Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs(Memphis, TN) vs the 11-1 Chargers out of Covington, TN. Raleigh-Egypt has not won by less than 12 points since an early 1 point thriller against Arlington, so this should definitely be an interesting game. I personally know how good the Chargers are this year, just as they have been in years past. The Crockett Co. Cavaliers will have a grudge match against the Haywood Tomcats. Haywood beat the brakes off of Crockett earlier this season, but this is a new day and I’m sure the Cavs are salty about their performance and would love nothing but to send the Tomcats home with an L. Also we cannot forget about the Maplewood Panthers that are trying to add to the hardware their basketball program captured earlier this year.

And for Class 6A we will start with the 10-2 Whitehaven Tigers taking on the White Station Spartans. White Station is a team with a losing record for the year but seem to have caught fire in recent weeks, with wins in 4 straight games, which would include last week over a then undefeated Germantown squad (29-28) and they knocked off Arlington as well (17-14), so I am sure they will not be intimidated by Whitehaven. Lastly i would like to highlight what I believe is going to be the game of the week and that is the Cane Ridge Ravens vs the Ravenwood Raptors. Both programs are ranked in the top 15 in the state. Tonight is going to be a very interesting night across this state for football.
