49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick recently made headlines by not standing during the playing of the national anthem. That in turn has sparked another conversation, in which now Kaep is receiving social media backlash but his comments about who he is as a man says more to me than his words about the anthem. “I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. If they take football away, my endorsements, I know that I stood for something.”
In a time where most professional athletes are too busy cashing checks and biting their tongue when it comes to the social injustices and economic issues that black and brown people face on a daily basis in America, it’s great to see Colin continue to stand for what he believes in. This isn’t the first nor will it be the last time that we will discuss Colin Kaepernick, the advocate, but I will be satisfied when we can discuss Kaepernick, the player, when he’s fully healthy.
