It was Senior Night in Brownsville, TN and the and the Haywood Tomcats were looking to finish their regular season with a win. The only thing that was standing in their way, was long-time rival, Ripley High School Tigers. The two teams met earlier in the year in Ripley and the Tomcats were victorious.
The gym was packed to capacity and the crowd was rockin’ like it was 1992 and Tony Delk was in the building. Ripley took the early lead in the game and held on to that lead until the end of the 3rd quarter, when the Tomcats had evened the score at 39. The 4th quarter began and Haywood went on a 12-2 run to and did not look back. Ripley would fight hard in the final 3 minutes but could not regain the lead, and would go on to lose 64-62, in what will go down as one of the best games played in West TN, this season.
Haywood was the victor, on a night that it’s “Mr. Basketball” candidate, Jordon Vanardo, would see minimal playing time in the first 3 quarters of play, the team needed to play together and not rely on their star player. This game had everything it needed to be great. The gym was packed, standing room only, and Ripley beat Haywood the previous year in Haywood, for the District Championship, but it would be a different outcome in this night, even with big games from their 1-2 punch, Isaiah Crawley and “Mr. Basketball” candidate, Chad Culbreath. It’s on to the District Tournament for both schools and Haywood has a bye week, while the Ripley will host the JCM Cougars on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
