It was 5 years ago on this date that the NFL world and Nashville, TN, were rocked with news that former league MVP, Steve McNair, had been found dead in apartment in Nashville. If you’re not aware of how McNair died, he was murdered by a young woman that was reportedly, his mistress. Here’s a man that was known for all of his kind and big hearted characteristics, yet he is found murdered by a mistress. It wasn’t making a lot of sense to me and I couldn’t fathom what had happened. But as I grew older, it made more sense. In life and death people will judge you, but I had to tell myself, that I am not to be the judge of any person’s life. I say that because some people will only remember the tragic end of lives but I am of the mindset, that all of his good deeds just can’t go unnoticed. McNair held many free football camps for the youth in Mississippi as well as Nashville. He was not only a great player on the field, but a great person off of the field as well.

There’s an old saying that I’m reminded of while typing this story, and that is, “Do as I say, not as I do.” Some people may agree with that statement some may disagree, but I like to think that a lot of our mothers and fathers had/have vices, but they always tell us how to be better, just because someone you know messes up, that doesn’t mean that you have to follow suit and do the same. So in remembering McNair, I want to say that his legacy on the field of being a warrior and never give up mentality,on the field, is almost second to none in my lifetime and his great charitable works and help for his community was number 1 in my opinion. So, on this day, if you’re a Titans, Ravens or even Alcorn State fan, remember #9 for the good, not the bad.
R.I.P. Steve “Air” McNair.
